The 2015-16 school year marked the start of Hempfield’s 1:1 program with students in 4th grade receiving an iPad. Grades 1, 5, and 7 were added in 2016-17. The remaining grades will receive 1:1 devices in 2017-18.
While many 1:1 programs in the area have started at the high school level, Hempfield High School’s student population of 2,200, and the need to keep all high school grade levels equally equipped, meant that starting there would be a significant challenge. Starting with a single grade level was determined to be the best strategy. Combining this with 4th grade’s position at the start of the hardware refresh cycle made it a logical choice.
A great deal of planning has gone into laying the foundation for the 1:1 program to be a success. Several days of professional development are provided to teachers to ensure they are prepared to integrate technology into their classrooms and successfully use many of the software applications available. Technology staff have been upgrading network connections and adding new projectors to classrooms to ensure the technology works as seamlessly as possible.
Students will carry their iPads with them when entering the next grade level. Each iPad is scheduled to be replaced every three years with new models being introduced in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10.
