School Board of Directors

  •
Our school board is a locally-elected government body that serves as the agent of the state legislature and the representatives of the community in providing a high-quality public education for the students of the school district.

School Board members perform three fundamental functions:
    • Hiring and evaluating the Superintendent
    • Setting board policy
    • Enacting the district's annual budget

Additional responsibilities of the School Board include:
    • Governance
      • Approve the district's vision, mission, and goals
      • Establishing, equipping, and maintaining school buildings
      • Adopting textbooks
      • Approving the annual school calendar
      • Monitor student achievement, success, and growth, and review data to make informed decisions
      • Engaging with the school community and keeping the superintendent informed
      • Provide oversight of district compliance with laws, regulations, and codes

Our school board consists of nine, unpaid members who serve a four-year term. School board elections are held every two years, and the number of seats up for election is staggered, with five seats elected one term, then four seats elected the alternate term.

  • School Board Committee Structure

The Hempfield Board of School Directors utilizes a committee structure to efficiently accomplish their work. The standing committees, including Buildings & Grounds, Education & Programs, Finance, and Policy, Personnel, & Legal meet on a regular schedule to complete due diligence. These meetings are all open to the public. The committees then report information and recommendations to the full board.

The School Board meets as a whole, on the second Tuesday of each month, except for December, when the meeting is held on the first Tuesday according to School Code. This meeting is called the Regular Meeting and is for the Board to take action on agenda items following review and discussion based on committee reports and recommendations. The School Board may take official action on any matter of agency business advertised as an agenda item on the agenda published at least 24-hours prior to the meeting. Additionally, in accordance with enumerated exceptions permitted by the Sunshine Act, the Board may take official action on other matters of agency business so long as the agenda is amended, and the public is given the opportunity to comment.
