In all, I have spent 32 years in public education. After beginning my career in northern New York in 1984 as a secondary science teacher, my wife and I moved our two kids to Lancaster County in 1992, where we have resided since. After 13 years of classroom teaching, I have spent the last 19 years in building and district level leadership positions - 10 years in Manheim Township and the last nine years here at Hempfield.
I have long believed that “people are program,” meaning that the excellent academic and extracurricular programs for which Hempfield is well known across our region are a credit to the very dedicated, talented professionals who work directly with our students, as well as all of the other employees who work throughout our system in support roles, ensuring that our students have access to the kinds of safe, nurturing educational environments needed for optimal learning to occur. Couple our very strong district staff with the outstanding collection of young people with whom we get to work and the tremendous support we receive from our parents and community and it becomes readily apparent why Hempfield is the special place that it is for students.
In November, 2014, our Board of School
Directors approved a three-year Comprehensive Plan available here that took effect July
1, 2015. In that plan, you will find the Hempfield School District
Vision, which is “personal growth, achievement, and success for every student.” I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure that every child has a meaningful, enriched school career at Hempfield that culminates with the earning of a diploma signifying that he or she possesses the knowledge, skills, attitude, and perspective necessary to thrive in the 21st Century, regardless of the career path chosen.
The challenges we face in public education today are many, but these challenges provide each of us with opportunities to learn, grow, and strengthen the school system for the benefit of our children, knowing that each of them must learn to be resilient and resourceful in order to successfully navigate our rapidly changing world. I am confident that by blending a growth mindset with honest communication and a collaborative spirit across the school system, we will continue to grow and improve our district’s ability to meet the varied needs of our diverse student population. I continue to look forward to the work that lies ahead!
