Remedial Science Course Descriptions
General ScienceCost: $175
Summer school general science will be a condensed hybrid course providing students with both guided and independent learning experiences. Instruction and guided learning experiences will be delivered in person on Mondays and Wednesdays and online using the Schoology course management system over five weeks of the summer. Additional office hours during the week will be provided for students to access help from their teacher. Students enrolled in summer school general science will engage in a pre-test to best determine which portions of the full course should be re-taught. Students will be provided with a modular learning experience designed to best meet individual needs. Students will either receive a full 4 weeks of either module The Chemical World or Molecules for Life depending on identified needs. Students will be provided with a one week review of the opposite module. This course is designed to provide students with foundational skills necessary to be successful in Biology and Chemistry.
BiologyCost: $175Summer school biology will be a condensed hybrid course providing students with both guided and independent learning experiences. Instruction and guided learning experiences will be delivered in person on Mondays and Wednesdays and online using the Schoology course management system over five weeks of the summer. Additional office hours during the week will be provided for students to access their teacher for help. Students will be given a pretest to assess what modules and anchors they need remediate in. Students will complete five modules focused on cells and cell processes and the continuity and unity of life content from the Keystone exam. Each module will contain a series of instructional videos, quizzes, activities, a lab, and test that will reinforce the key biological concept of the module. At the end of the course, students that previously failed to score proficient on the Keystone exam will have the opportunity to retake the exam and attain proficiency.ChemistryCost: $175Summer school chemistry will be a condensed hybrid course providing students with both guided and independent learning experiences. This course covers topics such as matter and its classification, chemical symbols and formulas, atomic structure, periodic classification of the elements, bonding, the gas laws and molecular theories, stoichiometry, solutions, acids, bases, and salts. -

Foundations of Mathematics 7 is designed to help students improve their computational and problem solving skills. Topics studied in this course will fall into the categories of the number system, ratios & proportional relationships, expressions & equations, geometry, and statistics & probability.

Remedial English Course Descriptions
English 7Cost: $175
In this differentiated literature and language program students will study short stories, classical mythology, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Students will complete a separate vocabulary program, complete assorted creative and expository writings, respond to prompts, and maintain a journal. In addition, students will investigate the parts of speech and the parts of the sentence. This course is designed for the student who is working at or above grade level in the language arts. To qualify for placement into this course, students are expected to have performed at the Proficient or Advanced Level on the most recently reported Reading PSSA and performed at or above grade level on district-approved local assessment(s).
Teacher input may also be a factor for placement in this course. The literary resources that students will use in this course are on a seventh-grade reading level, but additional resources will provide challenges for students with advanced skills in reading and writing.English 8Cost: $175This course includes the study of grammar, usage, spelling, written composition, public speaking, literature, and a challenging vocabulary program. This class requires students to prepare daily homework assignments, complete outside reading, and present speeches to inform and persuade. Students will complete assorted creative and expository writings, respond to prompts, and maintain a journal. Students selecting this level must complete assigned summer reading as preparation for the class.
This course is designed for the student who is working at or above grade level in the language arts. To qualify for placement into this course, students are expected to have performed at or above grade level on district-approved local assessment(s). Teacher input may also be a factor for placement in this course.
The fundamental text resources used in this course are at an eighth-grade reading level, but instruction also includes a wide variety of literary selections to provide challenges for students of different reading and writing abilities.English 9Cost: $175
This English course stresses grammar, usage, composition, literature, and speech in order that students may improve important communication skills. Emphasis is on writing improvement, literary awareness, and vocabulary development. All students complete a required research paper.English 10Cost: $175
This course includes the study of public speaking, grammar, expository writing, a genre approach to literature, and vocabulary study. Students will continue their study of grammar in context with the research paper process, working toward developing an effective expository writing style.English 11Cost: $175This course provides a chronological and historical study of American literature. Reading comprehension, analytical skills, writing, and vocabulary study are areas of emphasis. A formal research paper and oral presentations are required.
English 12Cost: $175This course uses a thematic and multicultural approach to explore questions of identity, power, family, and the American dream. Students will review major works and a selection of films, short stories, poems, and speeches. Students will be encouraged to make real-world connections with the texts. Students will also study vocabulary and complete a basic research assignment.

Remedial Social Studies Course Descriptions
Seventh Grade World HistoryCost: $175
This course includes the study of the social, political, economic, and religious systems of ancient Western cultures, with an emphasis on the relationship of ancient developments to the present day. The incorporation of numerous forms of visual aids to illustrate the locations and characteristics of these early civilizations is an important component of this course. Students will experience vocabulary instruction, the practice of literacy strategies, and collaborative inquiry, as well as research experiences.
Eighth Grade American HistoryCost: $175
This course combines a practical understanding of our history and geography with the issues of technological change and life in our culture. Analytical writing, through essays and research projects, as well as reading and vocabulary assignments are required.Ninth Grade American HistoryCost: $175
American History 9, 1870s-present provides students with a foundation in the historical, geographic, political, sociocultural, and economic development of the United States during this period. Students will examine the major issues, achievements, and challenges faced by our country and its leaders. This course includes connecting current issues in America with the past through the use of technology, cooperative learning, and individual interpretations.World HistoryCost: $175
The emphasis in this course will be on the relationship of the course content to the professional and work-life of the student in an environment of technological change and development. An understanding of world cultures and history including Western Europe, Middle East, India, China, and Africa from 1450 to the present. The course focuses on current issues that reflect historical and cultural trends.Government and EconomicsCost: $175The emphasis in this course will be on the relationship of the course content to the professional and work life of the student in an environment of technological change and development. The content of the course will focus on a study of the structure and functions of the United States’ political and economic systems.
Global AmericaCost: $175The emphasis in this course will be on the relationship of the course content to the professional and work life of the student in an environment of technological change and development. Global America is a thematic and chronological study of America’s modern-day influence and participation in world events. This course will emphasize modern American history since the Cold War and America’s role in global political and economic issues. Themes will include international conflict and compromise, comparative government, globalization, economic interdependence, and technology.

Remedial Half Credit Course Descriptions
HealthCost: $175
This course provides the student with an investigation of current health issues and attendant problems from the student's personal, school, home, and community perspectives. (Topics of instruction are based upon the PA State Standards for Public School Health Education.) The course provides students with learning experiences that enable them to effectively assimilate health information, and make discriminating decisions concerning their health and behavior as individuals, future parents, and community members.
Personal Finance LiteracyCost: $175
This course will provide comprehensive classroom experiences that allow students to develop the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions as a consumer. Students will develop financial skills related to income, taxes, financial planning, banking, consumer credit, budgeting, savings and investment, and insurance. Guest speakers and technology-integrated learning experiences will be experienced throughout the course.
Ninth Grade F.C.S.Cost: $175
This course, required of all ninth-grade students, fulfills Chapter 4’s academic standards requirements in Family and Consumer Sciences, and Career Education. It will also provide students with a positive transition to high school.
Fundamentals of Family and Consumer Sciences is an introductory course focusing on the development of management skills indicative of a healthy family. Topics studied will include personal finances, consumer rights, and responsibilities, housing decisions, the family life cycle, interpersonal communication, decision-making skills, science and technology influences, nutrition, weight and meal management, child development, and parenting and career education.
The computerized Real Care Baby Project is experienced by students as a requirement of this course as well. This course is a fulfillment of Pennsylvania FCS standards and is a requirement for graduation from Hempfield High School.

There is a mandatory orientation on June 12 for all classes, except PE/Health classes. Find the full orientation schedule here.
Important schedule information:
- LEC: Landisville Education Center
- PE: Classes have a required pre- and post-test which should have been scheduled at registration. The rest of the class is online. PE classes take place from May 30-June 13.
- FCS: HHS Room 31 on Thursday, June 15 and Thursday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m.
