Adapted from the beloved children’s book series by P. L. Travers and the popular 1964 Disney film, the Broadway version of Mary Poppins tells the story of the Banks family who live in an upper middle class home on 17 Cherry Tree Lane in London. Bert, a jack-of-all-trades invites the audience into the world of London in 1910, and specifically into the dysfunctional home of the Banks family. The children, Jane and Michael, are frequently naughty to gain their parents’ attention and are in need of a new nanny. Jane and Michael have their own ideas about the compassionate sort of nanny they would like to have, while their parents, George and Winifred, insist on hiring someone who commands more “precision and order” for the children. Bert’s friend, the mysterious Mary Poppins, flies in on the wind, becomes the Banks’ nanny, and offers the children a peculiar combination of whimsical magic and disciplined common sense. Together they go on many enthralling and transformational adventures to learn the importance of taking care of themselves, their parents, and each other.  Ultimately, Mary Poppins teaches everyone, children and adults alike, that “anything can happen if you let it.”

Featuring many popular songs from the iconic film, including “Jolly Holiday,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Chim Chim Cheree,” and “Step in Time,” Hempfield’s Mary Poppins is sure to be an enchanting theatrical experience for community audiences, young and old!

In Hempfield’s production senior Katie White will play the title role with fellow seniors D.J. Esbenshade and Hannah Rau playing George and Winifred Banks.  Bert will be played by freshman Noah Felty and fellow freshman Camryn Ackerman will play Jane Banks. Playing the role of Michael Banks will be LIC fifth grader Wilder Long. They will be supported by an ensemble of over 56 student actors and an all-student pit orchestra of 30 musicians.
