About Extended Day Kindergarten
-
The Hempfield School District currently has an Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK) Program for qualifying students. The program is offered in each elementary building. The intent of this EDK program is to provide an intense language and literacy-based environment for eligible students. The EDK classroom teachers focus on developing behaviors that support learning, language development, and emergent literacy skills. Students in the EDK classroom also receive double the math instruction as half day kindergarten, the same science and social studies curriculum as half day kindergarten, and art, library, music, and physical education.
Eligibility for EDK is clearly defined, and students complete an extensive assessment process prior to the school year before being considered eligible for this specialized program. The district provides transportation both to and from school for all students attending the EDK program. The hours for EDK are the same as a regular school day, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
