In Person Learning FAQ

  • If a student becomes ill at a sporting event where they are the visiting team, how should they be transported home?

  • If a student is tested for COVID at their place of employment, should the student remain home and not come to school until they get the results?

  • What if a student was due to be evaluated for services in the spring but this did not occur due to the forced closure and subsequent online delivery of instruction? What happens next?

  • How will Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and any other Related Services be provided?

  • How do the reopening options impact IEPs and GIEPs?

  • Will students be on camera all day?

  • What happens when a behavior or other incident happens in the classroom and it is recorded or potentially screenshot? Has the district considered the ramifications and privacy concerns?

  • Will my student be on camera? Is this illegal because someone can easily take a screen shot of the classroom event and have a photo of my child. What about foster care students, adopted students, or students who opted out of photography?

  • Can we wait to make a decision about a learning option until we receive answers to building specific questions?

  • What if there is a substitute or a shortage of substitutes?

  • If the county moves to yellow, can a child move to a new option? Will there be any changes district wide?

  • What Can Be Worn As a Face Covering?

  • What do facial covering breaks look like?

  • Can students remove their masks for a good part of the day if there is enough spacing between desks?

  • Will parents have the option to go virtual if there is a confirmed case in the school building and return when the parent feels it is safe for their child?

  • What does quarantining mean?

  • What does isolating mean?

  • If the school has a COVID case, to what degree will parents/guardians be informed of their child’s potential exposure? Given HIPPA, will we know if a child in specific grade or classroom tests positive or will it be a broader announcement given out to the school community?

  • Will the preschool lab at the high school remain open?

  • Will virtual kindergarten correspond with my student’s already assigned time (ex. 12:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. for afternoon kindergarten)?

  • Will classrooms be cleaned between AM and PM kindergarten? Between classes at the middle and high school level?

  • When will iPads be available for students who are learning in person?

  • What type of cough can cause a child to be sent home?

  • What happens if kids are sick with a fever that does not have an identifiable cause, such as strep or an ear infection? When would these students be permitted to return to school?

  • What proactive measures is the district implementing to ensure safe, in-person learning opportunities?

  • How will symptom screening be handled for students and staff?

  • For what health symptoms should a student or staff member stay home?

  • How often will schools, classrooms, and materials be cleaned?

  • Are students required to wear a face covering? In classrooms? In common areas? At recess? On the school bus?

  • What Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be available in each school?

  • Will visitors be permitted during the school day?

  • How will families be notified if someone in the building tests positive for COVID?

  • What happens to in-person learning if my student must quarantine?

  • How will the district provide a continuity of education should the Governor force the closure of schools?

  • Will students be permitted to use lockers, either in the classroom or in the hallway?

  • How will the school cafeteria safely serve food to students?

  • If students are eating in classrooms, how can students with allergies be safeguarded?

  • How will students safely transition to classrooms during the day?

  • Will students be able to socialize safely at school?

  • Will Hempfield be hiring additional staff to support the increased cleaning efforts?

  • Will flexible attendance policies be implemented so families do not feel they must send their students to school if they are displaying symptoms of illness?

  • I am worried that my child will be bullied if he/she cannot wear a mask?

  • What if my child will not keep a mask on? What are the consequences?

  • What if my child will not social distance? What are the consequences?

  • Why can’t the bus driver take temperatures upon entering the school bus in the morning?

  • How is a teacher or support staff team member going to be able to keep six feet away from the students and give individualized instruction?

  • Will there be a Sneak-A-Peak before the start of school?

  • How will school pick up and drop off traffic be handled?

  • How will fire drills and intruder drills be conducted when students need to be socially distanced?

  • Will visitors need to take off their mask when entering the building to show that the picture on their license matches their face? Masked strangers can be very scary for children, how will this be handled?

  • Have you assessed the safety significance of masks, open doors and windows?

  • Will elementary students go to special area classrooms or will special area teachers come to them?
