Driver Education

Hempfield High School no longer offers classroom instruction in Drivers Education. Students may register and earn credit for this course through Virtual Drive of America.

Spring registration for online driver education is now closed. Students should begin working on the lessons through the Virtual Drive website, using the name and password entered during registration. Students enrolled in the Spring semester course will receive a letter from the high school confirming your registration.

As the end of the semester draws near, students should listen for announcements about signing-up for the final exam, which will be given during final exam days at HHS.

If you should have any questions, please contact Mrs. Brumbaugh in the Grade 10 Office, 898-5634.

Behind-the-Wheel Training Options

Students, 16 years of age, who possess a driver's learner permit qualify to participate in the Behind-the-Wheel training experience.

This program is not offered by our school district. However, you may access information related to two local vendors who shared their information with us. The two vendors are AAA Driving School and State Champion Driving School

Please Note: In order to obtain a certificate of completion, students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction. This certificate may allow students to qualify for an insurance premium reduction through their insurance company.

AAA Driving School

The AAA Driving School would like to invite you and your child to enroll in its comprehensive in-car program.  The in-car instruction focuses on: defensive driving techniques, understanding the vehicle, city driving, expressway driving, country driving and parallel parking.

The Driver Training Cars are equipped with automatic transmission and dual brake controls. These vehicles are kept in excellent operating condition, and are fully insured.  All of the in-car instructors are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. For more information, please refer to the AAA Driving School's Informational Brochure.

State Champion Driving School

Each student will complete six hours of behind-the-wheel training. All driving will be in a real car (no simulators) with a responsible, licensed instructor. The cars are equipped with dual brake controls and automatic transmission. The lessons will be given on actual city streets, highways and freeways.

Upon successful completion of both phases of the program (behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction), students will receive a certificate, which may be used for reductions in insurance premiums. In addition, a regular license may be attained at 17 ½ years of age with a good driving record. For more information, please refer to the State Champion Driving School's Informational Brochure.
