Child Nutrition Department

The Child Nutrition Department participates in the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, and After School Snack Programs, providing nutritious meals and snacks daily to students and staff. Regulations regarding meal patterns and program procedures are established by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Not only is our department concerned with serving nutritious meals, we are also very diligent in maintaining food safety and sanitation standards. Every school has a minimum of two staff members who are trained and ServSafe certified.

More than 820,000 school lunches, 105,000 school breakfasts, and 65,000 snacks are served in our 11 schools by a dedicated, caring, and well-trained staff of 125 full and part time employees.

*Please Note: Breakfast will not be served when there is a 2-hour snow delay.

You will find answers to many of your questions by clicking on the links to the right.  The selection of a la carte items available to students in the course of a school day is now restricted by Federal mandates. We have worked hand-in-hand with the HSD Wellness Council to provide the best offerings within these mandates.

  • A la carte beverage options in grades K-8 are 1% or non fat milk in a variety of flavors, 100% juice, and water.
  • A la carte snacks fall into the category of no more than 100 calories, no more than 8 grams of fat, and less than 35% sugar.
  • The Dairy Council has recommended the use of 8 oz. plastic containers for milk, reducing the incidence of leaking product. Since 8 oz. of fluid milk is a required component of the National School Lunch Program, we have chosen to use 8 oz. plastic containers.  Swiss Premium Dairy is our provider of milk products.
  • We are now offering an affordable alternative to the birthday treats that parents traditionally bring to the classrooms in grades K-6. This is an easy way to celebrate your student's special day! The Hempfield Birthday Basket is the answer. Check out the Birthday Basket page.
