Elementary Curriculum

Primary Grades K to 2

In the primary Grades K-2, we realize that young children grow and develop in different ways and at different rates. We must provide them with a positive and nurturing learning environment that allows them to succeed. The focus of our primary grades is on providing instruction and other learning experiences geared to the acquisition of skills in reading, math, and writing. We provide these experiences in such a manner as to establish and foster an enthusiasm for learning that will carry on to the intermediate grades.

Transition Grades 3 and 4

Grades 3 and 4 provide a transition time from the primary grades to the more academically demanding intermediate Grades 5 and 6. During these transition years, the students will experience more independent reading and become more responsible for independent work. Students will become more familiar with content area subjects, such as Science, Health, and Social Studies by applying fundamental skills learned in the primary grades.

Intermediate Grades 5 and 6

Children in Grades 5 and 6 will be expected to learn and apply more sophisticated strategies to be able to read more difficult text for meaning, master more rigorous mathematical concepts, expand on their writing skills, and apply prior learning to make sense of new concepts in Science, Health, and Social Studies. Children are taught to be more able to handle responsibility in terms of individual assignments, homework, independent work, and behavior. Art, Music, and Physical Education opportunities are available to promote the talents and skills that emerge throughout these early years. We take great pride in our Fine Arts Curriculum and in our Physical Education Offerings. Library and Technology skills become more important as the students use these resources to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world.
