District Demographics

Hempfield School District is a suburban/rural community located approximately 30 miles south of Harrisburg and 5 miles west of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the heart of what is commonly known as Pennsylvania Dutch country. The district extends over 44 square miles in the western portion of Lancaster County, and consists of two townships (East and West Hempfield) and two boroughs (East Petersburg and Mountville). Hempfield is a very desirable place to live and raise a family; business and industry continue to thrive and from a geographic perspective, the district is close to major metropolitan areas such as Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.

The Hempfield community has a population of over 45,000 residents, with a minority population close to 20%; approximately 25% of our student population is classified as economically disadvantaged.  The community is comprised of families that come from a rich blend of agricultural, blue collar, and professional backgrounds. The Pennsylvania Dutch heritage is alive and well in the Hempfield area and beautiful farm properties still dot the landscape of our community.

Hempfield School District serves approximately 7,000 students who attend one of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Hempfield students generally score significantly above the mean on state and national assessments. We annually graduate more than 90% of our students, and approximately 64% of our graduates go on to continue their education beyond high school. The district and community are very proud of the rigorous, robust curriculum offerings and high quality of instruction to which students have access, and the arts, athletic, and other extracurricular opportunities available are second to none in the region. Local pride in the school system is a significant strength, and our schools are the beneficiaries of great support provided by parents and the Hempfield community.
